He founded Blue Lantern Martial Arts initially in Newport, Kentucky, eventually relocating to Elsmere, Kentucky where the academy grew and became a community focal point in Northern Kentucky. In the Spring of 2026 he was offered a career opportunity that required a move to Texas. Leaving his students in Kentucky was one of the hardest decisions of his life, but the opportunity to bring Shaolin Wing Chun to the DFW Metroplex is an exciting challenge!

Outside the kwoon, Sifu Griffith built a distinguished career in medicine, spending more than twenty-five years in the operating room as a Certified Surgical First Assistant and robotic surgery specialist before transitioning into the Biologics representative field. That background informs his analytical approach to anatomy, biomechanics, and precision in martial arts instruction.

Philosophy

Sifu Griffith teaches that kung fu is not simply a fighting system—it is a way of living.

His philosophy blends three complementary traditions:

  • Shaolin Wing Chun and its emphasis on efficiency, adaptability, and complete martial development.
  • Wude - 武德 (Martial Virtue), stressing humility, respect, discipline, compassion, and ethical use of force.
  • The Norse ideal of the drengr, emphasizing honor, courage, truth, perseverance, self-reliance, and personal responsibility.

Rather than creating fighters driven by ego, his goal is to cultivate warrior-scholars—people capable of protecting themselves and others while exercising wisdom, restraint, and compassion.

  • Courage: Physical bravery is emphasized, but true strength means controlling one's fear and ego.
  • Fair Play: Treating opponents with respect and avoiding cowardly or deceitful acts.
  • Generosity: Showing a magnanimous and noble spirit toward friends, strangers, and even foes.
  • Reliability: Keeping one's word and standing firmly by family and community.

Central to his philosophy is the belief that:

"What I think affects how I feel, and how I feel affects what I do."

This progression—Thoughts → Feelings → Actions—encourages students to develop emotional discipline alongside physical skill through meditation, mindfulness, and deliberate practice.

Teaching Style

Sifu Griffith's teaching style combines traditional martial arts values with modern educational methods.

Students can expect:

  • Practical, reality-based instruction that emphasizes understanding why techniques work instead of memorizing choreography.
  • Individualized coaching, meeting beginners and advanced practitioners where they are while continually challenging them to improve.
  • A structured curriculum The "Green Book" with clear progression and measurable goals.
  • A welcoming, ego-free environment where advanced students mentor newer practitioners and everyone is encouraged to grow together.

Classes typically begin with meditation to cultivate focus before transitioning into technical training, conditioning, partner drills, and application. Students learn to integrate:

  • Combat effectiveness
  • Physical fitness
  • Mental discipline
  • Emotional resilience
  • Personal character

The Mission

At its heart, Sifu Griffith's mission is to preserve the authentic traditions of Shaolin Wing Chun while making them relevant to modern life.

His vision is to build not merely successful martial artists, but people of character—individuals who embody courage without arrogance, confidence without aggression, and strength tempered by humility.

For Sifu Griffith, success is measured not only by tournament medals or technical proficiency, but by the kind of person a student becomes through the lifelong practice of kung fu.

Honorable service and honorable life

US Navy Veteran

Sifu Griffith served 10 years honorably in the US Navy, including multiple tours to the Persian Gulf, Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. He is a proud Veteran and a vocal supporter of Veterans' benefits and rights.

Drengskapr

Sifu Griffith is the grandson of Welsh, Icelandic, and Norwegian immigrants. He leans heavily into this ancestry and lives by the teachings of the old ways. The Code of the Jómsvíkings which placed emphasis on drengskapr.

Valiant men who exert a good influence are called drengur (drengr). A drengr possessed bravery, nobility, magnanimity, a sense of fair play, respect for others, the strength to do what is right, and a sense of personal honor. Physical bravery was taken for granted.

More important was self-control. A drengr showed equanimity in the face of danger, not because of insensitivity or stupidity, but because the danger and the possible risk to life and limb was unimportant compared to the need to maintain self-respect and the respect of the community.

To a Norseman, one's reputation is of utmost importance, it is considered the one thing that will live on after him.
