Sun Toi 神台 Shrine

In martial arts terminology, "Sun Toi" (神台 / Shéntái) refers to the traditional ancestral altar or shrine found within a traditional Chinese Kung Fu school (kwoon). In a Shaolin Wing Chun lineage, the Sun Toi serves as the spiritual and cultural heart of the training hall and displays the direct lineage of the Sifu.

In our case, our Sifu is a second generation Norseman and gives a nod to that ancestry with the drakkar (Viking longship) incense burner.

The altar is not treated as a place of religious worship, but rather as a profound symbol of respect, lineage preservation, and martial ethics (Wu De). It connects modern students directly to the historical roots of the art—tracing back from their immediate Sifu up through Grandmaster Yip Man, and ultimately back to the Southern Shaolin Temple where the art originated.

  • Lineage & Deities: The altar features portraits of the lineage ancestors. It also  features a statue of Guan Yu (General Gwan), the Chinese god of war who represents loyalty, righteousness, brotherhood, and courage. It also features lucky bamboo.
  • Featured prominently is a statue of Buddha, which is the central focus of Shaolin WIng Chun-- the concept of freedom from attachments and being in the moment.
  • It is guarded, as well as the kwoon in general, by a pair of Fu Lions (shishi), representing Yin and Yang.
